Diamond cut AMG alloy wheel after refurbishment

Most modern cars from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, VW and Land Rover leave the factory on diamond cut wheels, while most older cars and aftermarket wheels are painted or powder coated. When your wheels need refurbishing you can keep the finish you have or switch — here is how to decide.

What is a diamond cut wheel?

A diamond cut wheel is machined on a CNC lathe after painting. The lathe skims a thin layer off the face of the spokes to reveal bright, polished alloy with fine circular machining lines, while the pockets between the spokes stay painted (usually dark grey or black). A clear lacquer seals the bare metal. The result is the two-tone, mirror-bright look you see on most new premium cars.

What is a powder coated wheel?

Powder coating applies a dry pigment electrostatically to the whole wheel, then bakes it in an oven at around 200°C where it melts into a smooth, hard shell. There is no bare metal anywhere on the wheel. It can be any colour — silver, gloss black, satin, gunmetal, bronze, gold — and any sheen.

When to keep diamond cut

  • The car is on a lease or PCP and has to go back looking original.
  • You are selling and want the OEM look buyers expect.
  • The wheel has only been cut once or twice before.

When to switch to powder coat

  • The wheels have already been cut several times — we check the face before quoting.
  • You want a different colour or a tougher finish for winter.
  • The car does high mileage on salted roads.
  • You prefer a lower repair bill next time a kerb finds you.

Still not sure? Send us a photo of your wheels and we will tell you which finish they have, how many times they have been cut, and quote both options.

FAQ

Related questions

Can I powder coat a diamond cut wheel?

Yes. If a diamond cut wheel has been cut too many times or you just prefer a solid colour, it can be fully powder coated in silver, gunmetal, black or any colour.

Which finish lasts longer?

Powder coat. A diamond cut face is bare alloy under a thin clear lacquer, so any chip lets moisture in. A powder coated wheel has a thick, baked-on colour and clear layer.
