Cracked alloy wheel welding in Ipswich

A crack in an alloy wheel usually shows up as a tyre that goes down overnight, or a hiss when you spray soapy water on the rim. Left alone, cracks grow — and a wheel that fails at speed is dangerous.

We TIG weld alloy wheels at the workshop, grind the weld flush, then pressure test the wheel to confirm it is airtight. If the crack has also pulled the rim out of true, we straighten it in the same visit.

Is this the right service?

You need crack welding if you have:

  • Tyre losing pressure with no puncture found
  • Visible crack on the inner or outer rim
  • Crack discovered during a tyre change or MOT
  • Pothole damage that has split the rim
  • Rare or expensive wheels not worth replacing

What's included

  • Tyre removal and crack located with dye or pressure test
  • Crack ground out and TIG welded with the correct alloy filler
  • Weld dressed back flush, inside and out
  • Straightening if the rim is also out of true
  • Pressure test, tyre refitted and balanced

from [£70] per wheel

The process

How we do it

  1. 01

    Locate

The wheel is pressure tested to find the exact extent of the crack.

  2. 02

    Weld

Crack ground out and TIG welded. The wheel is pre-heated so the weld bonds properly.

  3. 03

    Dress & test

Weld ground flush, wheel pressure tested again.

  4. 04

    Refit

Tyre refitted, balanced and the wheel returned.

FAQ

Crack welding: your questions

Can a cracked alloy wheel be repaired?

Cracks on the rim barrel and lip can normally be welded safely. Cracks through a spoke or at the hub face are a different matter and we will usually advise replacing the wheel.

Is a welded alloy wheel safe?

A properly TIG-welded repair on the rim, pressure tested afterwards, is safe and widely used — including by main dealers. We never weld a wheel we would not put on our own car.

Will the repair show?

On the inner rim it is invisible. On the outer face we dress the weld back and refinish the area, or refurbish the full wheel if you want it perfect.
